Rockin’ the Vote – Phoenix Style
City of Phoenix, AZ
Population: 1,445,632

Time: Friday April 20 - 9:00-10:15am

Voter turnout in the August 2011 Phoenix Election was the second highest in city history. The increased turnout wasn’t a fluke. Yes, people are getting more engaged, but the increased participation was partly because Phoenix used a voting center concept for the first time. As more residents are heading to the polls to make their voices heard, Phoenix is making it easier and more convenient for residents to cast their vote. Although voting by mail in Phoenix elections accounts for nearly 90 percent of all votes received, many voters still prefer an in-person voting experience on Election Day.

Instead of 128 traditional polling places close to home, registered voters have the flexibility to cast their ballot at any of 26 locations throughout the city. Phoenix also is providing more choices by allowing residents to vote over a three-day period, including a Saturday. Now, there’s no more confusion on where to vote or rushing to the polls on Election Day. Attendees of @PHXElection’s rockin’ presentation will learn how switching to voting centers can be a success for any community. Also, the new way of voting is a significant cost savings for the city, which is a huge benefit for taxpayers. That alone is reason to attend! In addition, attendees will learn how the city conducted extensive outreach to the community by attending numerous meetings with neighborhood groups and nonprofits, as well as utilizing social media for the first time to inform residents of the change to voting centers. Everyone wins with voting centers, well, at least all the voters!

Attendees will learn:

• How a voting center concept can work for your community
• Elections: ways to save your organization money
• Using existing (and free) resources for voter outreach
