No Municipality Is an Island
City of Lake Forest and Village of Glenview, IL
Population: 44,692

Time: Wednesday April 18 - 11:00-12:15pm

18 municipalities came together to discuss creative approaches for delivering municipal services. The outcome: instead of separately seeking contractors for routine work, the municipalities would work together to purchase and share services and commodities. The economies of scale achieved were expected to translate into savings that could be reallocated for other services.

This regional cooperation, known as the Municipal Partnering Initiative, to date has achieved savings of between $389,500 and $529,500, which ultimately result in savings for the taxpayers of the participating towns. As important, it has allowed administrators to unearth revenues in their budgets they wouldn’t have had and presented the option to move up work originally planned for future years.

Attendees of this interactive workshop should expect to contribute to a discussion on:
• How to break out of a culture of isolation;
• How to cultivate and improve relationships with counterparts;
• How to challenge employees to get past the “this is the way we’ve always done it” mantra; and
• How to overcome potential obstacles and begin a successful regional partnering initiative.
