The City of Durham identified a need for the development of a Strategic Plan to create a vision for the future and chart a course to ensure our financial viability and standards of living. A key component of the Strategic Plan is our Performance Management System dashboard and the creation of the Citizens Oversight Committee. There were no systems designed to allow for posting performance publically and still allow for the city to seamlessly incorporate their website within its own, The City’s new Performance Management System is a site that provides the public with a single starting point to view performance across multiple departments as it relates to the City’s overarching Strategic Plan.

The site was developed with the support of a Citizens Oversight Committee, in an effort to have a user-friendly, intuitive, and consistent look and feel across all measures from Crime to Economic Development and to make the identification of trends, status, and targets more legible. Since the implementation of the performance management system, there have been several positive outcomes to include increased and improved outreach to our citizens, a Performance Monitoring team established to ensure the integrity of the data, an overall improvement in communication (both internally and externally), increased transparency, and the ability to track performance trends.

This session will include a demonstration of the City’s new Performance Management System, lessons learned from our partnership with the Citizens Oversight Committee, and an engagement exercise giving participants an opportunity to wear several hats while planning, developing, and implementing a Performance Management System.
